Roberto Mighty: Audiobook Producting/Directing

Roberto's career began in a teenage radio drama workshop at WNYE-FM in Brooklyn. This experience, combined with his multimedia background and a love for literature, has led to an interesting specialty: producing and directing audiobooks for major publishing companies, including Random House and HarperCollins.

Roberto's recent work includes projects directing Pulitzer Prize Winner John Updike, Oprah's Book Club winner Andre Dubus III (House of Sand and Fog), Howard Zinn (A People's History of The United States), Robert Pinsky (former Poet Laureate of the United States and co-author of Koufax!) Gregory Maguire (Wicked), and many others. Publishers also fly him to other cities to produce bilingual projects, such as his recent work in Spanish and English with MacArthur Fellowship recipient Sandra Cisneros, author of The House On Mango Street.

We can take your audiobook project from start to finish, including budgeting, arranging for an abridgement if necessary, lining up the right narrator (or deciding to have the Author read it), choosing a recording studio, completing the recording and editing process, and getting your product mastered, duplicated, professionally packaged and ready for shipment to bricks and mortar or online retailers and distributors. Or, we will perform any combination of the above steps to augment your capabilities where needed.

Roberto’s Audiobook Directing Tips
Listenability
“I like to review the abridgment for “listenability,” and then forget all that and just listen to the reader as if I’d never heard of the book, the story, or the Author. If it isn’t compelling and understandable from moment to moment, I roll up my sleeves and go to work on the performer and/or the text.”

The Audience of One
”Audiobook listening should be a very intimate experience. I try to impress upon the reader that he/she is performing for an audience of one.”

Perform vs. Read
”Here’s what I try to get across to narrators: It’s not a reading in a studio. It’s a performance for all time. And we want to people to be blown away. Forever.”

Between the Covers and Inside Your Head
How it All Started...Roberto’s audio career began when he took apart his older brother’s reel-to-reel tape recorder. Roberto was 9. His brother was pissed.

Narrowly surviving that incident, Roberto went on to combine his love of audio with his interest in theater (he was in every school play from junior high through high school) and music. He started playing guitar in bands at age 13, and Roberto schlepped mics and tape recorders to their gigs. The defining moment came at age 16, when he was chosen to become a member of WNYE-FM’s (New York public radio) “All City Radio Workshop.” Young actors and actresses from all over the city met regularly to record radio plays. “I stepped into the recording studio, saw all the equipment, and thought I had died and gone to heaven.” Says Mighty.

After graduating from Boston University, Roberto went on to build and operate three recording studios and a film soundstage. Now, he Produces/Directs Audiobooks, TV, film, radio, streaming media and DVD’s.
