Sorceress - Flamenco Rock meets Iberian Funk

Roberto Mighty's first album,
"Sorceress," features Iberian Funk, his signature combination of Spanish, Latin and Soul music with blazing electric guitar. The original songs on the album are inspired by the magical-realist art of Lucrecia Novoa, the Chilean sculptor and performance artist.

The title song, Sorceress (La Hechicera,) lyrically mixes love, magic and memory -- and firmly establishes Roberto's unique style-- a blend of flamenco, rock, salsa and soul.

Tengo Un Secreto (I Have a Secret) is an intimate ballad about unrequited love;

Mujer En La Casa (A Woman in the House) is a hot, Salsa song about how a house feels with no woman in it; featuring one of Roberto's electric guitar solos;

Spanish Bells is an irresistible dance number with hot Latin percussion;

What About We? is a plaintive wail about a dying relationship, features a jazzy organ solo by John Harrison;

Pensando En Ti is a smoky ballad about love’s obsession;

Respuesta Por Favor (Please Reply) sways to a sensuous Brazilian rhythm;

Hold Me, Like You Did Before reflects on the loss of intimacy in a long relationship;

Will O’ The Wisp fantasizes about…fantasy;

Think Twice cautions new lovers about the vulnerability of love.

INSPIRATIONS

Flamenco
"The Sorceress" music begins with a Flamenco-style guitar intro. In fact, the whole song has an Iberian influence, mixed with my own Latin-American (Panamanian) heritage and my years of living in New York, the world capital of Salsa.

Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum has a painting by John Singer Sargent entitled "El Jaleo", which depicts a torrid scene in a Spanish flamenco bar. I have admired that painting for many years. I hoped to incorporate some of its feeling into this project.

Iberian Funk
The Iberian Funk sound is my own creation, but Sorceress has many inspirations. I played all six of my guitars on this track, including a Spanish classical guitar; a Brazilian flamenco guitar; a Japanese steel-string dreadnought; an Ovation 12-string; a bass guitar; and my beloved Fender Stratocaster on lead.

Influences
This massing of guitars was influenced by the Gipsy Kings "wall of guitars" sound. I'm playing stinging, melodic leads, a direct inspiration from Carlos Santana. I also laid down several tracks of latin percussion, courtesy of growing up hearing Tito Puente and Eddie Palmieri.

My classical/flamenco fingerstyle guitar playing is a direct result of watching Jose Feliciano play "Light My Fire" on the Ed Sullivan show when I was a boy. His big sound and incredibly soulful singing and playing has had a powerful influence on me." - Roberto Mighty
