KiTCHEN MuSIC: New album cooks up groovin' standards

Singer/Guitarist's debut album features jazzy versions of romantic songs from the 40's and 50's over today's sensuous grooves. Special Guest: Saxophone legend Walter Beasley. Companion video cooking series on the web.

Boston, MA: Roberto Mighty's debut album, "KiTCHEN MuSIC," includes his all-new arrangements -- rhythmic versions of standard romantic songs from the 40's and 50's -- over sensuous grooves, featuring his jazz-influenced singing, funky acoustic guitar playing and famed saxophonist Walter Beasley. Audiences will also find Roberto's companion cooking/music video series on www.robertomighty.com.

Mom Sang While Cooking
"When I was a kid, these are the kinds of tunes my Mom sang and whistled while she was cooking," says Roberto. "I love these old standards, and it's a kick to update them with hip arrangements and rhythmic grooves. Now I sing these songs while cooking for my daughter, and she's learning them too."

Similar Artists
Fans of Michael Bublé, Harry Connick, Jr., Tony Bennet, George Benson, Earl Klugh, Dianne Reeves, Cassandra Wilson, Rod Stewart, Flora Purim, Nnena Freelon and other modern artists who perform standards will already be familiar with the songs on KiTCHEN MuSIC.

Songs on the Album
Roberto's guitar-centered arrangements feature his lead singing, a full band and backing vocals. "Misty" takes Erroll Garner's pop hit and gives it an upbeat, funky groove. Tony Bennet's "Fly Me To The Moon" is re-imagined with a doo-wop vocal intro, a horn section and a club dance beat; "Night and Day" is remade with hip-hop drums and a three-part vocal sound; "Autumn Leaves" gets an uptempo, danceable treatment featuring an eight voice gospel-style chorus and tight horn arrangements; "My Ship" takes Ira Gershwin (Lyrics) and Kurt Weill's (Music) 1941 hit, and puts in a throbbing, syncopated drum track. Other cuts from KiTCHEN MuSIC include "Here's That Rainy Day," "In The Wee Small Hours of The Morning," a live studio version of "All The Things You Are" with solo jazz guitar accompaniment; Hoagy Carmichael's "Skylark," and perennial jazz standard "My One And Only Love."

Says Roberto: "I love the romance, lyricism and sophistication of the Great American Songbook. Compositions by artists like Cole Porter and Ira Gershwin set a standard that has yet to be surpassed. KiTCHEN MuSIC takes these songs and sets them to today's hip, sensuous grooves. I try to make my singing intimate and seductive, and my nylon-string guitar is my duet partner."

Musical Influences
"I was raised in a household full of music, separated by which floor folks were on. On the second floor, my brother Pancho was playing music by accessible jazz artists like George Benson and Grover Washington. My brother Pedro was playing straight ahead bebop by John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy and Rhassan Roland Kirk. On the first floor, my Mom and Dad were playing songs by Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington and Tony Bennet. In my basement hideaway, I was playing Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Santana and Led Zeppelin."

Added to all this was whatever band was appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show. "That's where I saw José Feliciano, The Beatles, Nat King Cole, Victor Borge and Elvis Presley, to name a few." His musical ear was further enriched by his Panamanian-American heritage, which combines influences from the Caribbean, like The Mighty Sparrow, as well as Latin Jazz and Salsa influences by artists like Eddie Palmieri and Mongo Santamaria.

Multi-Talented
Except for a guest saxophone solo by Walter Beasley, Roberto Mighty performs all of the instruments and voices on the KiTCHEN MuSIC album, including six different kinds of guitars; electric piano and organ; up to eight vocal tracks, various percussion instruments and MIDI. In addition, Roberto produced, arranged, recorded and mixed the entire KiTCHEN MuSIC CD in his bedroom on a home recording setup. The process took two years. "It was exhausting and terrifying," says Mighty. I would get paralyzed for weeks at a time, thinking, "These songs were recorded by Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Wes Montgomery. How dare I even think about making my own versions? But I was compelled to finish KiTCHEN MuSIC, because the arrangements kept going around and around in my head, driving me nuts."
