KolorGirlz CONCEPTS

Two years ago, I saw a special evening of woman comedians of color, "Colorstruck," at the Jimmy Tingle Theater in Somerville, Massachusetts. As a man, I found many of their statements and revelations startling. Some of the performers were mesmerizing. Some of them were upsetting. Most of them were hilarious.

I soon resolved to explore the notion of woman comedians of color — and their backstories — at the national level. But I needed a structure for my film. Coincidentally, I had recently discovered the ancient Roman poet, Ovid, through a collection of his poems translated by Ted Hughes (see below). I soon saw a way to use Ovid's poetic visions of mythic females as a framework to build my film around.

TALES FROM OVID
I had been reading and re-reading the ancient Roman poet Ovid's "Metamorphosis" collection. This 2,000 year old poetry is about supernatural transformations. Many of these poems focus on the unique perspectives of females — mortals, demi-gods and goddesses.

KNOWLEDGE IS DANGEROUS
In several of Ovid’s poems, the price for learning about the world is death. Or sometimes a fate worse than death. Each of the women in KolorGirlz has gained forbidden knowledge in her journey from girlhood to womanhood. At what price?

TRANSFORMATION THROUGH LAUGHTER
Uniquely, the comedians of KolorGirlz are able to transform their experiences into cathartic laughter for the rest of us. Through our laughter, we learn. I see my subjects as Demi-Goddesses, or Priestesses. Their experiences have transformed them. Now they stand on the oracular stages of America’s nightclubs and share their secrets. Will we, too, be changed?

FRESH PERSPECTIVES
The women of KolorGirlz bring fresh perspectives to the American conversation. Together, the audience and I will discover what these women are all about. I hope viewers will be enlightened and disturbed by them, as I was that first night. I want people to get angry, weepy and turned on while watching KolorGirlz --in between bouts of hysterical laughter. — Roberto Mighty, Director
