KolorGirlz Bio Page: Esther Ku

Esther Ku tackles some of today’s most pressing taboos with the finesse and brutal force of an earnest 2nd grade honor student mocking a smelly kindergartener. She brings her trusting audiences into a private room to convey what it’s like to view the world through her eyes. There are so many preconceived notions of people who are small and Asian all of which are dispelled in a matter of seconds when she graces the stage.

Her candid demeanor is best demonstrated with segues like, “So I just discovered Jews recently...” She also believes that just because some people are larger in size does not necessarily entitle them to more space. “I hate fat people. They take up more room. It’s not fair!” she proclaims. Her simple logic leaves people wondering how serious she really is in all of her riotous commentary.

Having been censored all her life by multiple forces, some of which have something to do with being Asian, Ku is unapologetic about her absolute adorableness that she refers to as dangerous. When asked why modeling is not her chosen career route, she will calmly reply, “I would rather fail as a comedian than succeed as a model.” The subtext of her jokes is never too unintelligent for even those who make lots of money.

At the tender age of seventeen, Ku was censored from her high school newspaper for revealing the corruption in her school system. So she ventured off to create an underground newspaper aptly titled “the Coup.” Here she humbly took on the roles of both heroine of the student body and nemesis of the administration. The highlight of her brief journalistic career was when she sat down on a toilet in the girls’ bathroom nearest her locker to read, “ESTHER KU – DIE!!!!!” on the wall of the stall.

Since then, Ku has moved from Chicago to the east coast, where death threats do not scream at her while she is urinating in a public bathroom…not yet anyway. Ku resides in Boston where she is constantly rehashing her view of the world into a comedic routine for the enjoyment of anyone willing to listen and die laughing.

On her spare time, she is currently working towards ending all tickling. “Tickling is forcing someone to laugh when you’re not being funny. Tickling is the opposite of comedy. If you’ve ever tickled anyone, you’re a fraud!” she warns. Ku’s muses include Harold from Harold and the Purple Crayon and Charlie from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
